i've successfully compiled stuff that used autotools from decades ago. and yet, CMake won't work with something released in August 2024.

i can only conclude that CMake isn't intended for use in the same way that autotools is; it's only intended for short-term use within closed development projects.

that's fine, but they need to say so, and explicitly counsel against source releases that rely on CMake.
