It was the daftest advice. When I was a kid my mum would tell me to wear clean underwear "in case I was run over and taken to hospital".

For a start, I suspect the underwear might not stay entirely clean in those circumstances, but also we lived in a village and there were about four cars a day travelling through it in those days.
