The Cary comes with Electro Harmonix preeamp and phase driver tubes. One of the preamp tubes started squealing within weeks. Cary replaced it under warranty. It started squealing again. So I replaced the preamp and phase driver tubes with JJ. Sounds pretty good. I thought it would be fun to tube roll so I got the Genalex Gold Lions and some NOS. Phillips tubes. The Philips sound like the JJ's. The Gold Lion was one that failed right out of the box. Tube Depot had me replacements in a week
