It is VERY possible. A coworker and I once inadvertently walked past a major gun-fire riddled riot in the middle of San Jose, CA, years ago in the late 1990's when we went out to get lunch. We walked. We passed right THOUGH a violent riot before we even realized what we'd walked into. We tried to get back into our workplace and they refused to let us in despite showing them our work badges until I cell phoned my manager to come down. I can absolutely see it happening.
