Yep, the suffix -stan comes from the Persian language which means “place of,” “land of,” or “country of.” So Bulgaristan literally means land of Bulgars. Here we use it as a joke when we ironically compare Bulgaria to third world Islamic countries or when we imply we have no sovereignty as in the times during Ottoman rule. Turkish people call Bulgaria Bulgaristan in their language, so Bulgarians using the term usually imply we never got liberated from the Turks.
