We went to see The Odyssey in 35mm just as Chris Nolan did NOT intend his film to be seen, & indeed, when not in IMAX, the image is muddy & dull. There's not much to see. This is more of an IMAX event than a movie.
But I was surprised by what struck me the most: this movie is in desperate need of gore (it barely shows blood!).
Nolan tries to emphasize the horrors of war, tries to make the Cyclops dreadful, etc. & is stymied at every turn by his own squeamishness.
