Here's a really characteristic 1992 example of the great D&D cover artist Larry Elmore's style. Note the incomprehensible posing, where each figure looks reasonable on its own, but there's no interaction between them. Elmore always shows you the whole figure from the front, even though the situation would demand that one largely be behind the other or turned away from the viewer. Like amateur theatre.
