I figured out one of the tools Aphex Twin uses to make his wild sounds and I was playing with it yesterday and its powerful. Its call Soundshaper and it uses the Computer Desktop Project command line binaries (these are open source and can be compiled Linux). You do something called spectral shaping/filtering and other effects to make a mundane sample sound like its from the 9th dimension eldritch horror.
