Lauren Aliza Green learned to play the violin to a high level as a child, starting with the Suzuki method when she was 3, and going on to perform in orchestras, competitions and recitals, with countless hours of practice. Then in her teens, she quit — conscious of the fact that perhaps she would never be the best. "I sensed it was only a matter of time before I lost my spot at the top. Better, wasn’t it, to step down while I was still number one; when the adults around me might view my abdication as a loss rather than a relief?" She writes for LitHub about her experience of losing and regaining music, and what it taught her about perfectionism.
