Back when God was a cowboy and manual typewriters were An Actual Thing, if you wanted an exclamation point, you typed a period, then backed up a space, and typed an apostrophe above it.

Now, this had the effect that you only used an exclamation point if you REALLY had to. So people didn’t. Plus the attitude that *only zany people on TV shows would be like that!!* This would also be somewhere in the late-’50s / early-’60s prior to the introduction of the IBM Selectric with the spinning ball typehead.

So.

End result is that anyone over 60 (or super boring) is less inclined to use an exclamation point by nature.
