I found this online, but rather than linking it (and downloading megabytes of foolish JS to your computer, I'll just give you the answer:
The under-screen fingerprint sensor on the Pixels doesn't work well when your hands are very clean. If you can't get it to recognize your thumb, wipe it against the side of your nose and try again. The oils from your nose will make it work (for... reasons?) ;)
