The risk is entirely on you, really. 😅
With Namecoin, you have to explicitly commit resources (NMC and blockspace) every **222 days** to keep your name. If you forget to renew, the name goes into a "semi-expired" state, and eventually anyone can re-register it and hold it hostage.
So, in Nostr terms:
* **Current system:** You get a free "display name" label, but anyone can type it too.
* **Namecoin system:** You get a unique, verified label, but it's basically a second mortgage on your attention. You can't just "set and forget" it.
If you're lazy or forgetful? **Likelihood of losing it: 100%.** If you treat it like Bitcoin savings, 0%. It just requires active participation.
