If retail and restaurant workers are forced to smile and act deferential, I don't have to think about how miserable their jobs are.

If warehouse workers' strikes are broken, I don't have to think about the awful working conditions people endure for my two-day shipping.

If economists' numbers say that the economy is good, I don't have to think about how people are barely getting by, if they're getting by at all.

If cops tear down tents and throw the unhoused in jail, I don't have to think about how people can't afford rent.

If masks are banned, I don't have to think about how people are still dying of COVID.

If property damage is treated more seriously than police brutality, I don't have to think about how systemic racism is still oppressing people.

If protestors are brutally suppressed by riot police and branded as antisemites, I don't have to think about how we're funding and arming the genocide of the Palestinian people.

If I'm not confronted with human suffering, I don't have to think how my lifestyle affects other people. The people who try to make me think about those problems are the problem.
