UK Treasury Pressed on Tether Stability
🎤 The Conservative Party MP Charlie Dewhirst MP asked HMT whether the Chancellor would ask the Financial Conduct Authority to assess the security and stability of funds invested in #Tether, a Stablecoin.
🎤 Economic Secretary Lucy Rigby KC MP responded that stablecoins could drive important innovation in payments and settlement but can cause consumer harm if not properly regulated. She said the UK has worked with international partners through the Financial Stability Board (FSB) on global standards, and reiterated that the government is building a comprehensive FCA-led UK regime for cryptoassets, including stablecoin issuance.
