The Norwegian government has released private messages exchanged between Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a message sent at 9:48 a.m. ET on Sunday, Støre urged de-escalation amid tensions over Greenland, Gaza, Ukraine, and recent U.S. tariff announcements. He reaffirmed Norway’s positions, stressed the need for transatlantic unity, and proposed a phone call with Trump later in the day.
In a reply sent at 10:15 a.m. ET, President Trump referenced Norway’s decision not to award him the Nobel Peace Prize, said he no longer felt bound to focus solely on peace, and argued that U.S. interests must come first. He questioned Denmark’s claim to Greenland, cited security concerns involving Russia and China, criticized NATO’s burden-sharing, and stated that global security requires “complete and total control” of Greenland by the United States.
