We recommend avoiding Private DNS if you use a VPN and you should probably use a VPN if you want to improve your privacy to have a shared IP address. Private DNS screws that up a bit by having different DNS resolvers from most of the other users. Many of the reputable VPN providers are starting to recommend disabling Private DNS to avoid this and other issues. We linked Mullvad's help page recommending that in the thread we linked.
