We need to learn history and the classics in large part, I think, because it disabuses us of ideas about our uniqueness. Our unique moral goodness, our unique depravity, our uniquely terrible ideas... they all fall away in the light of ten thousand years. And once we're no longer uniquely brilliant or uniquely terrible or uniquely whatever, our current problems start seeming small enough to tackle.
