So, the US has apparently started bombing Kharg island. This is Iran's main oil export facility, handling like 90% of its oil exports. If Iran is prevented from exporting oil and can no longer derive a national benefit from keeping the strait open, that gives them a good motivation to further penalizing the US and US allies in the gulf for allowing this to happen. They'll mine the strait, because they'll have no reason not to at that point.
