A rooster will definitely help keep smaller predators like cats away, but won't be able to do much about foxes or larger. Or hawks.
And would just be a snack for a bobcat.
Our rooster got beat up pretty bad by a fox a few months ago; the poor guy tried, and lost most of his tail in the fight, but the fox still made off with a hen and killed another.
The attacks didn't stop till I put netting over the entire chicken yard, so the hawks can't fly in and the foxes can't climb the fence.
(NorCal has _climbing foxes_; wtf.)
