there is a weird, out of the way, locally owned lumber yard and hardware store near me. i went in there today, and asked a bunch of questions to find out how they seem to be thriving in the era of the blackrock owned megastore.

the story i got was the local guy who founded it was a vietnam vet who intentionally chose weird, out of the way locations in rural areas, and built the business on real community serving customer service. the vibe in there is so much different than any big corporate hardware store. its filled with old dudes who can build anything and know exactly what you are talking about before you finish explaining it. and in the back of the building there is a row of offices for guys whose only job is to take calls from local general contractors so they can deliver exactly the tools and lumber they need.

standing in there you feel the automated phone tree, mega corporation, indifferent box store bullshit leaving your body
