I've been re-reading The Wicked Years tetralogy by Gregory Maguire, which I first read around 2012. If you're not familiar, it's a re-imagining of the Oz mythos which inspired that Wicked musical that I've never seen that then spawned that grotesque Hollyweird assault they call a movie.

It's an excellent series of novels in my view, easily his best work. The author builds out a queasy magical realist playground through which he pursues an unrelenting exploration of pessimism; the series is heavy with themes of absurdism, psychosis, abandonment, the destruction of innocence and self-nullification. So you know, just the fun stuff.

How about you?
