Joey Smallwood was the main champion of the yes vote in 1949, and his pitch was primarily economic. NL at the time was under the British boot in a big way. I remember my grandfather (RIP) who grew up poor as Newfie dirt, who was too young to vote but old enough to work, said the mood in his shop was "Anyone but the cursed British". It was the British who were blamed for poor wages and no social supports.
