I have, this late in life, come to love the work of anthropologists who, looking broadly at both current or recent communities and those in the deeper past say that "It doesn't have to be this way, that communities and civilisation can be ordered differently, in a way that ensures a decent quality of life for all". Perhaps standing out is the much missed David Graeber. It simply doesn't have to be this way. We prioritise the wrong (capitalist) things and give power to the wrong people.
