I used to fundraise the the civil rights NGO Liberty on the streets of London, and this was the template reason I got from thousands of people. (Meaning, I've no doubt, it was a soundbite they'd been fed by the press.) My response was, what if tyrants get in or Fascism rises again? It could happen. What if they then outlaw something you do now and consider a right? It was more unthinkable back then, but was creeping in (post 9/11). I think about that A LOT now.
