There's a good paved route through there.. cima road, kelbaker road, just drove it last fall. Just make sure you have gas for the whole route plus margin. Absolutely no services but it is the Mojave.

Literally every driver should have a paper map for the area in the car. Five bucks takes up no space rarely used doesn't matter, it's that one time you need it... Costs you nothing otherwise.
