Not denying your underlying point, but a sidebar comment on the Copernicus example:

This is often framed as a *Church doctrine vs. Scientific truth* battle but, as In understand it, it was actually about the downstream moral and theological effects. About human hubris. The Medieval model of the cosmos had earth at the center not because it saw earth/man as *the greatest part of creation* (how moderns often think about what it means to be the center of something) because the center of a thing in their time represented the lowest point. Like a drain in a tub. So when Copernicus comes along and presents a heliocentric cosmos the Church wasn't concerned with what was scientifically accurate they were concerned that if man no longer saw himself in the lowest place in the heavenly hierarchy it would bring about pride and distort an understanding of the lengths Christ went to in saving us. And one can argue that this is essentially what happened.
