It's turning your own house into a home with your own hands, because you want it done right and you want it to last. There's pleasure in doing a sweaty job correctly, so it doesn't have to be done again. This is the expanded version of 'callous' I guess. It's just a part of life that one misses by never doing a hard piece of work. It's satisfying.
