I've always believed in reducing barriers—technical, financial, cultural. I think they're roadblocks to human potential. Someone might have powerful ideas, but not have the cold tech skills (or financial means, for that matter) required to realize them.
The tradeoff is: sure, you'll get a tidal wave of crap, but you also give more people a better chance to realize their ideas and develop their abilities. Some really amazing stuff can come out of that.
