Asked a Belarusian friend how he is doing. His response is not the usual platitude but: “There is a new wave of criminal cases against our journalists through home searches and questioning of their family members in Belarus.”
This is what life in autocracy is like. It sucks. It is awful. It is mindnumbingly awful. It is deeply unfair. It is mentally and physically violent and painful.
This friend is a hero to me. He reminds me that every day I get to spend speaking and living freely is a gift and privilege that cannot be taken for granted. We all have a moral obligation to not tolerate kleptocratic oppression anywhere.
