bouncing ideas of llm:
What if the OSI model is no longer the right way to think about the internet?
For decades, we've organized networking around 7 layers, IP addresses, hosts, sessions, and transports.
What if we started over?
Not by renaming the layers.
By questioning why we need them in the first place.
Introducing a thought experiment:
Internet III — A Post-OSI Reference Model
5. Applications — Permissionless software
6. Information — Signed, portable, replicated data (Nostr)
7. Identity — Cryptographic identity instead of platform accounts (Nostr)
8. Sovereign Networking — Encrypted peering, identity-based addressing, discovery, and routing (FIPS)
9. Physical Connectivity — Any medium capable of carrying bits
No mandatory IP addressing.
No mandatory DNS.
No mandatory centralized identity providers.
No mandatory cloud infrastructure.
Nostr makes identity and information portable.
FIPS challenges the assumption that networking must revolve around IP addresses and traditional routing.
Start as an overlay on today's internet.
Evolve into an independent internet of interconnected networks.
Not Web3.
Not another social network.
Not another protocol bolted onto a captured stack.
A fundamental rethink of the internet itself.
The OSI model gave us a language for the old internet.
Maybe it's time to define one for the next.
Internet III — The Internet, Free Again.
Thoughts? What would you remove, merge, or reinvent?
