Hmmm... the main way I could be happy with those retrocomputer projects would require just mostly foregoing the notion of working in RAM and largely just going full-persistent, with RAM being the minimal working-memory.
Without fast persistent storage that would be pretty slow. On the other hand, it would make power fluctuations and such barely do anything as almost no state would ever truly be volatile.
