The late David Graeber who wrote Bullshit Jobs proposes UBI as a solution. The philosophy behind the book is that the majority of jobs are bullshit and meaningless. He argues that there would be little-to-no impact if they disappeared or became automated.

Here in the UK we basically do have UBI. The benefit system, although necessary and in place to support those who need it, is rather oversubscribed. I know a plethora of people who openly admit to exploiting benefits because they don’t want to work.

Nevertheless as somebody who studied economics I can tell you that this certainly isn’t universal and I don’t think it carries the incentive not to work or inflationary risks that UBI does. There’s valid arguments for and against UBI but the general verdict across reputable economists is that a more targeted approach would be better, as we’re seeing here. It carries significantly less risk because there’s a limited budget allocated. Not to mention they’ve been running a data-driven pilot program for a while and by funding these people they’re able to get more out of the economy in the long run. For every €1 they invest they expect to get €1.39 back - generating €100 million in 3 years!

Additionally they’re putting €1 million into grass root music venues. This is fantastic!!

Living as an artist isn’t easy by any stretch. Income can be irregular. We need music venues to go to, gigs to see, museums and the like. Without these magical things, a large part of the creative industry would die.

The money invested into those music venues and artists isn’t just being spent on anything, it’s going back into local economies. This is great for economies. Especially for a lot of young people who hold a degree in music or arts and then end up underemployed at McDonalds or something.

Surely one of the only meaningful things in life is the music and arts. The things that are irrational and don’t make sense. It’s living proof that our civilian is beyond basic survival. The things that you don’t need for survival are what makes life worth living no?
