Saint Dionysius the Areopagite
The holy hieromartyr Dionysius the Areopagite was baptized by the holy apostle Paul and is numbered among the Seventy Apostles. Before his baptism, Saint Dionysius grew up in a prominent family in Athens, attended philosophical school, and was married and had several children. He was a respected member of the highest court in Greece, the Areopagus. After converting to the True Faith, he was consecrated Bishop of Athens. He joined Saint Paul in missionary travel, leaving his family for Christ. In Jerusalem, he visited the Mother of God and was present at her Dormition. Witnessing the martyrdom of Paul in Rome, Dionysius desired to be martyred as well. He went to Gaul with his presbyter Rusticus and deacon Eleutherius, preaching the Gospel to the barbarians. There, his suffering was equalled only by his success in bringing so many pagans to the Christian faith. In the year 96, Saint Dionysius and his two companions were seized and tortured for Christ, and all three were beheaded.
