It is what it is I suppose. It's now not unusual for me to ask someone what their favorite local place is and they rattle off someplace they didn't know was a national chain because there is only one in their area.*
The handful of times I've been to the U.K. or Japan I've found their local dining establishments completely enthralling, a chance to eat at a place that isn't a hole in the wall and isn't the end result of a endless corporate marketing discussion. I'll be upfront with you though: Americans of all races don't like that stuff, they want sh!t as bland and predictable as possible.
*It reminds me of going to the Cheesecake factory with a buddy who lives out in the sticks:
Him: "This place is amazing, these local places can be amazing"
Me: "Lol dude, there's three of these stupid things just within a half an hour of my house".
