Society, but also regulation, has made healthcare a way more normal job. The generation of my parents were doctors who accepted (and back then it was completely legal, and actually encouraged by the tax code), working 80+ hours work weeks. Nowadays, doctors are legally allowed to work 40 hours per week like any other employee, night shifts are normally taxed, and they need compensation time to relax after night shifts.
