A better patch analogy would be the fundamental cryptographic functions. These have a security shelf life.
I don’t really care at all about op_return as far as relay policy: that doesn’t change the consensus in any meaningful way. But disabling op codes which are already used for monetary transactions seems like an over reaction to the magnitude of the spam problem.
CSAM is obviously a red herring. Anyone conceding that it matters must then explain why it doesn’t after finding CSAM on chain.
