grub isn't great either. Though systemd-boot can be set up to load with EFI-runnable kernel and initrd from esp and/or as single packaged whole with UKI which allows a bit more control towards certain set-ups. Each their own. Conversely, systemd is getting rather sizeable which may be cause for worry in itself. It's hard to say.
