Addiction is a disease of the mind, body, and the spirit. It feels like witnessing a living death in real time. You grieve for them slowly until they're completely gone. Help is only effective when they really want it. After their final hurrah, they're no longer alive, but they continue walking as empty shells waiting to be buried or turned into dust. Their connections grow distant and they cling on to things and people that brought them in that state. If there is a thin veil in communication between life and death, addiction is simply that personified.
