The reason deep colors require a sheer base is to prevent the colors from going pastel on you. For instance, if you put any red into a white base, you'll get pink paint as the result. So the darker colors like navy, red or black go into a base that's mostly clear so the color isn't lightened by the white.

I did not expect this yellow to need a deep base, but it sure did! Once I started to apply it onto the door, I could see how rich and intense the color was and I understood a lot better!
