You either ride Amtrak uncomfortably at a bargain, or you ride Amtrak comfortably at the cost of your kidney. With overnight routes, there is no middle option.
Also, the food is only something to write home about if you are on the two-story trains that they run out west with the dining car. The east coast dining experience is all microwaved, pre-packaged, processed foods.
The roomettes are cozy though.
