I don’t know if that’s actually right or not because I was 6months old when Reagan took over.
But I know that, my dad for instance, doesn’t recognize the Republican Party (my mom is an evangelical trumper but they are divorced) and the one thing that *I* have seen shrivel in my lifetime is policy positions.
I think Reagan was great at delivering policy positions. Most of them have turned out at best to be wrong and at worst hot garbage, but they were arguments for positions nonetheless.
I still have policy debates with my dad. Not because I’m dyed in the wool blue but right now the democratic party makes up a huge portion of my values — but we haven’t known a real policy debate in this country in years.
Gingrich helped seal that deal. And then we birthed Steve Bannon who popularized “flooding the zone with so much sh!t” and here we are with Trump as Jesus and everyone in their corners and the first sensible — not great — just the first actual attempt at a border bill getting shot down because it would make reelection a problem.
I hate this. I want a forum of ideas. I want to hear from the communists and the anarchists and the left and the right and the really left and the centrist who compromises on everything to get to the long run.
We don’t even know how.
