Love the phrase "lockstep individualism". Even when trying to be different, people emulate each other in coming up with names.
My thoughts on picking baby names:
- easy to spell and pronounce. Don't be "unique"
- check the name meaning, avoid those with negative meanings
- avoid names leading to easy insulting nicknames
- not too common
- avoid origins/connotations you disagree with
- be wary of naming after celebrities; they might have scandals later on
