I still believe that a factor in Trump getting elected the first time was people voting for him in "protest" thinking he would never win. I don't have the data to back that up, & I think we may never really know because how people vote & why is all self-report.
I'm pretty sure I know a couple people who voted for Trump that first time around thinking it was a joke or a way of registering disapproval for Clinton, but they've never quite come right out & told me that & most likely never will.
