Could I tell carob if the cut didn't also include some heartwood? Maybe not. But I think I can tell the difference between carob wood and oak.
One of the interesting features of the venue (Universitat Politècnica de València) is that there's a wood library in displays right outside the meeting room! These are rare to find nowadays.
