I don't think capitalism's control over science is weak at all. Not only does it control the funding, but it also controls the education system teaching scientists, controls the institutions of research, control the flow of information, controls the credential system that restricts who is even allowed to pursue science. It's control is very strong and that leads directly to metric shitload of junk science being published, publicised, and used; ultimately harming us.
