I mean I agree that scale isn't the goal but they do say pretty clearly that it's intended as a tech demo using masto as a concrete example so people couldn't say it's an over-simple toy example, not as an actual mastodon instance. they even say don't sign up here.
I think their point that "scale should be decided by how people want to use the thing, not based on technical limitations of the thing" is a good one, and lots of people actually do suffer from pretty shitty problems on moderately sized instances without super expert admins who can handle moderate scale.
like I wouldn't use this thing bc I don't trust the VC startups, but I don't think they're wrong to demo how a different software architecture could use resources more efficiently. If I could host a normal sized masto instance from a raspi that would be dope.
