-International Events-
1. Hurricane Melissa brings severe flooding to Cuba after devastating Jamaica: Melissa made landfall in Cuba as an “extremely dangerous” Category 3 hurricane, after devastating Jamaica as one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes in history. The storm caused extensive damage to homes, hospitals and schools in southwestern Jamaica, but the full extent of the damage there is unclear with it hard to get to. (CNN)
2. Russian Attack on Ukrainian Nuclear Facilities: Russian forces conducted a shelling attack that severed power to the decommissioned Chornobyl nuclear plant, prompting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to label it a global security threat. (TheGuardian)
3. Israel says Gaza ceasefire back on after more than 100 reported killed in strikes: Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for Gaza's Civil Defense agency, told NBC News on Wednesday that more than 100 people, including more than 30 children, had been killed since Tuesday night in the deadly strikes. An official from the Israel Defense Forces said that the command to carry out the strikes was a result of Hamas allegedly attacking soldiers in the southern Gaza area of Rafah in an Israeli-controlled area. (NBC)
4. Brazil: at least 64 reported killed in Rio’s worst day of violence amid police favela raids: At least 64 people have reportedly been killed in Rio’s worst-ever day of violence as more than 2,500 officers and special forces stormed an area of favelas near Rio’s international airport that is considered the headquarters of one of Brazil’s most powerful organised crime groups. For the first time, the gang reportedly used weaponized drones to drop explosives on special forces teams. (TheGuardian)
-US Events-
1. States sue Trump administration to keep SNAP benefits during government shutdown: The lawsuit, led by Democratic attorneys general in 25 states, claims that halting contingency funds would unlawfully deprive millions of groceries. (GroundNews)
2. ICE Undergoes Power Shift as Officials Work to Increase Illegal Alien Deportations: “On one side are Border Czar Tom Homan and ICE Director Todd Lyons, who have advocated focusing on criminal aliens and those with final deportation orders,” the Fox article said. “On the other side are DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, senior adviser Corey Lewandowski and Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino, who have pushed for a broader and more aggressive approach, targeting anyone in the U.S. illegally to boost deportation numbers.” (Fox/Breitbart)
3. Obamacare enrollees get first look at 2026 prices as premiums soar: Premiums for Affordable Care Act coverage will skyrocket 26%, on average next year, announced just days before open enrollment starts on November 1. (CNN) (AC-As reported in yesterday's DIB, this is the news the democrats have been waiting for in the shutdown debate. They reason that the subsidies authorized during COVID would help keep these costs down for Americans. The irony is that the Obamacare law passed (by a democratic majority) in 2010, was designed to necessarily increase premiums. Basic economic reasoning was missing then as it is now, with the resulting consequences. With the current 2-party system of policy swings, it'll be interesting to see how healthcare will continue to change.)
