As science gets trashed and manipulated in the US, I was reminded of the chemist Richard Willlstätter, who uncovered the structures of plant biomolecules, not least the anthocyanins and other indicators. An ardent patriot he signed the Declaration of the Ninety-Three just before WW1, but refused to develop poison gases with Haber - he developed gas masks instead.
