Ondol is a traditional Korean underfloor heating system based on the transfer of heat from flue gases. A fire is lit in a hearth located outside or to the side of the house. Hot smoke flows through horizontal channels beneath the floor, transferring its heat to layers of stone and earth before being vented outside through a chimney.
The floor retains heat for a long time, ensuring a consistent and pleasant room temperature even after the fire has gone out. This heating system is highly energy-efficient, requires little fuel, and creates a healthy indoor climate free from dry air.
