Half of it seems true but you are just assuming everyone can/needs to run the servers for free.
You are on someone else's property, which is why NIP-11 works
So that the person can define their rules.
Now for your example against email services: aka SMTP. You are sending the email to only that server. It isn't broadcasted to the multiple other email providers, unlike nostr where each relay is getting your ping!
Just add 5-7 relays that you and your friends can share and even if one takes you down, you don't lose the other friends.
Its not like the relay is distributing! You are distributing the information.
So no, it isn't the same story again
